During the Civil War, occupying Union soldiers are reputed to have left their mark in Savannah in a unique and unusual way — by subtly altering the gravestones in the colonial cemetery.

From Slavery to Civil Rights - Black Heritage Tour
From Slavery to Civil Rights - Black Heritage Tour
Activity Level: 4 out of 5 (some stairs and mostly walking)

The Freedom Trail Tour through Downtown Savannah visits sites including, First African Baptist Church, Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters and the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum. Learn about Savannah’s unique African American history from local history guide Jonnie Brown.

First African Baptist Church: First African Baptist Church is thought to be the oldest continuous African American congregation in America. It was built in the 1850s by both free African Americans and slaves. The builders made the bricks and built the church after the slaves had labored in the fields. The church was the first building constructed of brick to be owned by African Americans in the state of Georgia.

Sisters of the New South: The Sisters are serving up southern dishes that will feed your heart and soul. Just like grandma’s Sunday dinner, this southern feast has something for everyone. Come hungry because you will leave full.

Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters: The north half of the building contains the original slave quarters for the site. This two-story structure was composed of three rooms on each level. Nine to 15 enslaved people, about half of whom were children, lived and worked on the site at any given time between 1819 and the end of the Civil War. Once the war ended, the space became servants’ quarters, housing many of the same people.

Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum: Named after Ralph Mark Gilbert, the museum traces the history of the African American community in the city, from slavery to the present day, with an  emphasis on the civil rights movement.
